Reggae Radio Stations

Reggae is a music genre developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s.

The term reggae is sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of Jamaican music, although the word specifically indicates a particular music style that originated after the development of ska and rocksteady.

Reggae is based on a rhythm style characterized by regular chops on the off-beat, known as the skank. The tempo is generally slower than that found in ska and rocksteady.

Reggae is often associated with the Rastafari movement, which influenced many prominent reggae musicians in the 1970s and 1980s. Reggae song lyrics deal with many subjects, including faith, love, relationships, poverty, injustice and other broad social issues.

World Music Radio Stations

World music is, most generally, all the music in the world. More specifically, the term is currently used to classify the many genres of non-Western music which were previously described as "folk music" or "ethnic music". However, "world music" does not have to mean traditional folk music, it may refer to the indigenous classical forms of various regions of the world, and to modern, cutting edge pop music styles as well. Succinctly, it can be described as "local music from out there", or "someone else's local music".

Music from around the world exerts wide cross-cultural influence as styles naturally influence one another, and in recent years "world music" has also been marketed as a successful genre in itself.

Examples of popular forms of world music include the various forms of non-European classical music (e.g. Japanese koto music, Hindustani raga music, Tibetan chants), eastern European folk music (e.g. the village music of Bulgaria) and the many forms of folk and tribal music of the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Oceania and Central and South America.

Indie/Unsigned Radio Stations

In popular music, indie music (from independent) is any of a number of genres, scenes, subcultures and stylistic and cultural attributes, characterised by perceived independence from commercial pop music and mainstream culture and an autonomous, do-it-yourself (DIY) approach.

The term "unsigned artist" is used in the music industry to refer to a singer, songwriter, musician, or band that has no affiliation with a record label. Many unsigned artists sell their music and music-related merchandise without the financial support of a record label, while often seeking a recording contract through the recording of demos. The difference between an unsigned artist and an aspiring artist is that aspiring artists in most cases do not sell their music commercially.

Folk Music Radio Stations

Folk music, in the most basic sense of the term, is by and for the common people. Folk music is defined as "music of the common people that has been passed on by memorization or repetition rather than by writing, and has deep roots in its own culture." Folk music is an integral part of community centered cultures with people playing and singing together rather than watching others perform. In American culture, folk music refers to music exemplified by such musicians as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, who popularized and encouraged the lyrical style in the 50's and 60's.

Folk music can also describe a particular kind of popular music which is based on traditional folk music. In contemporary times, this kind of folk music is often performed by professional musicians. Folk music is somewhat synonymous with traditional music. Both terms are used semi-interchangeably amongst the general population; however, some musical communities that actively play living folkloric musics (Irish traditional music and Traditional Filipino music for example), have adopted the term traditional music as a means of distinguishing their music from the popular music called "folk music," especially the post-1960s singer-songwriter genre.
