College Radio Stations

"College" radio refers to radio stations that are operated and programmed primarily by college students. These stations are usually owned by a college or university and usually noncommercial FM stations operating below 92 on the FM dial.

The programming of "College" stations tends to differ greatly from station to station, but the fact that these stations are mostly run by volunteer college students gives them a special quality, which is why we list them all under one category.

Besides college news, and sports broadcasting, the schedules of these stations often includes a widely varying and eclectic mix of programming, including segments for alternative rock, punk, jazz, classical, blues, techno, hip-hop and world music.

Classical Radio stations

Classical stations play mostly instrumental music from the Baroque period to the early twentieth century (1650-1920). Vocal selections and opera are usually confined to special shows. Often these stations also include arts and culture oriented talk.

This musical genre is usually played on "Public Radio" stations in the U.S., although some stations do devote their entire program schedule to classical music.

These stations air Contemporary Christian Music (CCM). They tend to sound very much like Adult Contemporary stations, except that all the music has a religious nature. These stations usually play sub-genres such as Christian Rock and Christian Dance. The station may also air ministry programs or religious teachings throughout the day.

Alternative Radio Stations

Alternative radio stations formats, also known as Alternative Rock, Progressive Rock and Modern Rock, evolved in the 80's, and early 90's, propelled by the success of bands whose music had previously been limited to college radio stations.

For the most part, Alternative stations feature bands that play modern from the last 6-12 months, much of which has its roots in "punk", "grunge" and "metal", and is targeted for an audience of teenagers, young adults and college students.
